This is the very first reissue on 7” single of these super rare and gorgeous early Reggae tracks by one of the most underrated voice of Jamaica. Both these tracks were produced by Dandy Livingstone and released in 1969 on the Downtown label, a Trojan sublabel, on two separate singles:

- DT-436: Audrey "You'll Lose A Good Thing" with Desmond Riley "If I Had Wings" on the flip.

- DT-414: Audrey "Love Me Tonight" with Brother Dan All Stars "Shoot Them Amigo" on the B side.

NOTE: Desmond Riley "If I Had Wings" is featured on our companion single also to be released on June 21, 2025.

This reissue brings these two rare gems together for the first time on a 7” single allowing enthusiasts and collectors to experience their gorgeous sound.

The original pressings have become highly collectible, with copies fetching big sums in the collectors' market.

ABOUT AUDREY:

Audrey Hall, aka Audrey was born in Kingston in 1948, sister to Pam, Trevor & Raymond Hall, all Reggae artists.  She began her career as a duo, Dandy & Audrey with Dandy Livingstone. She recorded two albums with Dandy as a duo in 1968 and 1969.

She also recorded a handful of solo singles on the Down Town label with Livingstone as a producer. Dandy was a key producer shaping Jamaican sounds in Britain at that time. Although these tracks are actually all quite nice, two tracks really standout: “You’ ll Lose A Good Thing” and “Love Me Tonight” both released together for the first time on this single.

After the Skinheads craze subsided in Britain, Audrey moved to New York. During much of the 1970s and early 1980s, she worked as a backing singer alongside her sister Pam Hall. Under the name Audrey Hall, she made a real come-back as a solo artist in 1985 with producer Donovan Germain and scored many hits in the U.K.including “One Dance Won’t Do”, "Smile" and "The Best Thing For Me". 

Whilst she gained wider success in the 1980s with lovers rock hits, she did not quite get the recognition her outstanding singing skills deserved and she remains one of the most underrated voice of Jamaica…

ABOUT DANDY LIVINGSTONE:

Robert Livingstone Thompson is a prolific Jamaican reggae singer, musician, writer and producer who had a profound influence on the British Reggae scene and its related artists in the 60s and mid 70s.

Most famously known as Dandy, Livingston had many other aliases such as Sugar, Boy Friday, Brother Dan, Down To Earth, Mr Most, Prince of Darkness, Robert Livingstone Thompson and in groups, Brother Dan All Stars, Music Doctors, Sugar 'N' Dandy and more.

Livingstone who was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1943 moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1950s. He started recording for the London-based Carnival Records where he impersonated a Jamaican vocal duo by double-tracking his own voice, under the name Sugar & Dandy!

Dandy then signed with Giant in 1967 and released his debut album entitled "Rocksteady with Dandy" in 1968. Giant was a sublabel of the British record company “R&B Discs” owned by husband and wife Rita and Benny Isens, and was mostly dedicated to Dandy’s recordings and productions.

The same year he formed the duo Dandy & Audrey with Audrey Hall. Speaking of Audrey, the companion release of our present “Skinheads A Message To You” features two other rare Dandy productions, the fabulous “You'll Loose A Good Thing” and the very popular “Love Me Tonight”  by Audrey!

In 1968, Livingstone signed to Trojan Records, with whom he released his second successful album “Dandy Returns” and got his own Trojan sublabels, the highly collectable  Down Town Records and later the J Dan sublabel.

Dandy was extremely talented and prolific. He released 9 albums under his own name between 1967 and 1973 and countless singles including the monster hits "Suzanne Beware of the Devil", "Rudy A Message To You" and “Red, Red Wine” with Tony Tribe  just to name a few…

He returned to Jamaica at the beginning of the 1970s and has been living there ever since…

This is in fact a cover of "You'll Lose A Good Thing" a slow 1962 R&B hit written, played and sung by Barbara Lynn. In our humble opinion this cracking 60’s reggae cover is vastly superior to the original with its frantic electric guitar introduction, the cool harmonica solo in the middle and Audrey’s gorgeous vocals set against the up-tempo riddim. "You'll Lose A Good Thing" is a super rare early Reggae track that does rock. An absolute must!

B SIDE:

An original Dandy Livingstone composition, “Love Me Tonight” showcases Audrey’s tender, soulful side. Layered horns and bubbling keys back her sensual but restrained vocals. The song sits at the crossroads of lovers rock and early reggae offering a romantic storm of yearning and groove.

Very popular with the Skinhead crowd back then, it is yet another rare track from Audrey that complements perfectly "You’ ll Lose A Good Thing" on the A side. Two killers for the price of one!
