ABOUT HUGH MALCOLM

Hugh Malcom was a drummer in the The Upsetters (the Lee Scratch Perry studio band) first line-up and in Tommy MCCook’s The Supersonics.

Formed in 1968 the Upsetters had three different line-ups. The first line-up included Gladdy Anderson & Winston Wright on keyboards, Jackie Jackson on bass, Hugh Malcom & Lloyd Adams on drums. They were also known as Gladdy's All-Stars. They recorded "Man from MI5", "Return of Django" & "Live Injection" with Perry.

The Supersonics were formed by Tommy McCook after The Skatalites split caused by Don Drummond incarceration for murdering his girlfriend in 1965. McCook left Studio One to join the Treasure Isle label. The Supersonics were a mix of old partners from The Skatalites and new talented musicians. They were one of Jamaica's most creative and productive bands ever. Tommy MCCook was the band leader and he led them until they disbanded on a trip to Montreal Canada in 1969.

Hugh Malcolm was a great drummer, interestingly he was also a good singer as this double sider demonstrates. He recorded just three songs: “Good Time Rock”, “Love Brother Love (aka Hands Of The Wicked”, “Mortgage (Your Land)”, and one instrumental “Come Brothers”, all in 1968.

ABOUT THIS RELEASE

This killer double sider includes the two best and rarest songs by Hugh Malcom “Good Time Rock” and “Love Brother Love (aka Hands Of The Wicked”. It is the first repress on a 7inch for both songs. “Good Time Rock” was initially released in Jamaica on the Amalgamated and Pressure Beat labels and on Amalgamated in the UK whilst “Love Brother Love” was released on the Jamaican label Clancy’s Records only, all in 1968.

 “Good Time Rock” was initially released in Jamaica on the Amalgamated and Pressure Beat labels and on Amalgamated in the UK in 1968 with Lynn Taitt & The Jets - “Sleepy Ludy” on the B side. It was recorded with the Gibson All Stars as the backing band.

“Good Time Rock” or ““Good Time Rock, My Father’s Time Is Coming” as this terrific Reggay scorcher is sometimes labelled features Gospel like incantation vocals and choir on a martial and triumphant Binghi drums rhythm. And it rocks like hell… What an exceptional track.

Extremely in demand, it has never been repressed on 7inch vinyl until now.  Essential. 

B SIDE:

 “Love Brother Love” was released on the Jamaican label Clancy’s Records only in 1968 with The Dynamites “Sweet Africa” on the B side.

This rare and very expensive track is yet another outstanding tune from Hugh Malcolm with wicked vocals on an up-tempo rhythm and with backup singers on call/response mode.

This great track has never been repressed on 7” vinyl and the perfect B side for this killer double sider.
