50 YEARS ANNIVERSARY of Lee "Scratch" Perry/The Upsetters' EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN ALBUM - 1970
7" VINYL 45 RPM SPECIAL DANCE FLOOR LOUD CUT PRESSING SERIE
These two revolutionary proto Breakbeat/Funk/Dub high tempo dance floor killer instrumentals have been extracted from the 1970 EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN album... 50 years on and they still sound incredibly innovating and irresitible today! This release is definitely for the dance floor - heavy on breaks, drums, bass and Dub and these are highlighted further by the special LOUD CUT pressing.
Lee "Scratch" Perry was born 84 years ago and it still making music today. An excentric Reggae artist and a genius producer, Lee has written and produced unique songs for himself and everybody else worldwide from Bob Marley and Junior Murvin to the Clash and many more.
The Upsetters were originally Gladdy's All-Stars, led by pianist Gladstone Anderson and it was they who originally recorded the international hits "Live Injection" and "Return of Django". The double A-side release of "Return of Django" / "Dollar in the Teeth", peaked at #5 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1969. When other commitments prevented the All Stars from participating, another band named The Hippy Boys were recruited to do the subsequent tour in the United Kingdom. This line-up remained the studio band that is most associated with the name, going on to eventually form the nucleus of Bob Marley's backing band The Wailers.
The band included guitarist Alva Lewis, organist Glen Adams and brothers Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Carlton Barrett, on bass guitar and drums respectively. Under Lee "Scratch" Perry's direction, the band backed Bob Marley on a full-time basis, especially with his 1969 groundbreaking works Soul Rebels and Soul Revolution.
A SIDE: Title: "POPCORN" Artist: The Upsetters - Loud Cut pressing
Genre: Jamaican Funk/Breakbeat!
On 7" vinyl for the first time - originally published on the 1970 album The Upsetters' EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN on Trojan.
This is a licensed issue of the Jamaican funk instrumental track by Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters in 1970 and never issued on 7" vinyl previously. It has been more recently highlighted on the fantastic Soul JAZZ 100% DYNAMITE compilation album from 1998.
"POPCORN" is an incredible uptempo Funky breakbeat instrumental, predating everybody else by years, a dancefloor bomb full of syncopated beats, bass and drums. Awesome dance floor tune, absolutely unstoppable!
B SIDE: Title: "TIGHT SPOT" Artist: Dave Barker & The Upsetters - Loud Cut pressing
Genre: Uptempo proto Dub/Reggae dance floor crossover
This is a licensed reissue of the very rare 7" vinyl single version with Dave Barker on the microphone. Very much in demand, it presently trades at about USD300 for a decent copy if you can ever get one.
This is another deadly dance floor gem and a very special B side: TIGHT SPOT is an uptempo proto dub, full of hypnotic organ, sharp guitars, with several layers of sounds completed by Barkers's manic laughs and screams.
A truely unique and magical LSP dance floor creation.
